Know Idea has several Athletics Programs that are run through our Hapoel Sports Clubs. Currently, our sports include soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. Hard (härd) adj. hard·er, hard·est: (a) Resistant to pressure; not readily penetrated. (b) Physically toughened; rugged. Mentally toughened; strong-minded. (c) Performed with or marked by great diligence or energy.
Smart (smärt) adj. smart·er, smart·est: (a) Characterized by sharp quick thought; bright.
Mensch (mensh) n. Informal pl. Mensch·es or Mensch·en
(menshn) [Yiddish, human being, mensch.]:
A Person having Admirable Characteristics, such as Fortitude and Firmness
of Purpose.
Many soccer leagues focus on creating great athletes with little emphasis on the player's character. Many leagues focus on creating young men and women with good character, but they deemphasize the competitive aspect of the sport. Hapoel Sports is a unique sports club that strives to do both: create great athletes that are also big mensches. The Motto of the Hapoel Sports Clubs is Play Hard. Play Smart. And, Be a Mensch. Hapoel teaches their players to be competitive, to be hungry, to strive for success, but... to do it in a kosher way. The professional league format creates an outlet for the boys and girls to compete. The constant on-field and off-field reinforcement (e.g. the weekly newsletter, the end-of-season awards banquet, etc.) serves as a reminder to be mensches. Hapoel is as competitive as any youth soccer league, yet we couple this emphasis on athletic success with an emphasis on "menschlikite success".
